A Seminar for the Education & Training zone at MACH 2010

Tuesday 8 June 2010 from 11.00am - 12.00pm

“The growing role of lasers in 21st Century manufacturing”

Laser materials processing is the most flexible technology available to modern manufacturing and in this presentation we will review current laser technology and how it is being used for a wide range of industrial processes including cutting, drilling, marking, welding and additive manufacturing.

The presentation will be accompanied by examples of how and why lasers are used for manufacture of items from the micro-technology of mobile phones up to ocean going liners.

We will also address the important role that laser technology will playing in meeting some of the challenges of the 21st century, including energy generation, low carbon vehicles, healthcare and bioscience and high value manufacturing.

The Education & Training zone at MACH 2010

MTA have a bold plan to encourage more young talent to consider engineering based manufacturing as a career. In a new move, the MACH 2010 exhibition will feature a dedicated Education and Training Zone - aimed specifically at school and college students visiting the show. The centrepiece of the zone will be the widely acclaimed University of Sheffield AMRC with Boeing MANufacturing TRAnsporter (MANTRA) - a specially equipped 14m long lorry designed to give aspiring young engineers a hands on experience with real, leading-edge manufacturing technologies.

This is an exciting first time for the Manufacturing Technologies Association and for industrial employers to fully engage collaboratively with the education sector.

Once in the MACH 2010 Education and Training Zone schools with pupils aged 14-16 will be given managed tours to enable them to fully experience MACH 2010 whilst older students will be provided with educational packs produced by DTEP (Design and Technology Educational Partnership) which include details of a self-guided tour. The tours include a visit to the MANTRA for which Rolls-Royce; Boeing; Sandvik Coromant and Mori Seiki and 3-D virtual reality company, Virtalis, have all contributed resources for the students to experience. In addition the zone features a seminar area and will play host to a number of relevant exhibitors, such as yourselves.

The zone will also be aimed at training managers, trainers, other Exhibitors and their staff, so there is a training element to the zone as well.

During the show students and trainees will have a MACHPACK programme of activities and support materials to take back to school, college and consortia.

Visit the AILU and Photonics and Plastic Electronics KTN at Stand 4448.

DTEP (www.dtep.org.uk) and MTA are marketing MACH and the zone out to all UK schools and colleges and visitor registration is open now through the dedicated education page http://www.mach2010.com/education.
