Agency supports Midtherm Laser’s precision vision

A dynamic Black Country firm which has trebled the turnover of its sub-contract laser-cutting business in the past two years is set to expand again, with the support of regional development agency Advantage West Midlands. Midtherm Laser Ltd, based in Peartree Lane, Dudley, currently employs 14 people, offering a range of quality managed flat-bed laser-cutting services to a range of clients including suppliers to the motor component, air transport, building technologies and specialist manufacturing industries.

Managing director Richard Andrews, who started the firm in 2001, has completed a major re-investment of around half-a-million pounds in the company, purchasing a state-of-the-art Bystronic flat bed laser machine.

Midtherm Laser’s expansion plans were enabled by Selective Finance for Investment in England (SFIE) grant for nearly £88,000 from Advantage West Midlands, and will create another six jobs.

Dean Cockayne, Operations Director at Midtherm Laser, said: "No job has even been too big or too small for us and the company has grown steadily since 2002 and in June 2004 the demand for our services meant we had to move from New Road to larger premises in Peartree Lane.

"More skilled and dedicated staff have been employed which has enabled the business to grow, turnover increasing 300 per cent since the move.

"A glance around the production floor shows the vast range of work we undertake - stencils for the Tate Gallery in London, parts for staircases at Heathrow’s new Terminal 5 building, metal signage and precision cutting for aircraft, car and bus components.

"The new machine, which should be installed and up and running by the end of May, gives us the ability to cut 2000mm wide sheet with up to 5.2 kilo watts of power.

"The SFIE grant from Advantage West Midlands his been crucial in helping us realise our expansion plans, provide security to current employees and create another six skilled jobs."

Patrick Palmer, Head of Access to Finance at Advantage West Midlands, said: "Midtherm Laser is a dynamic and forward-thinking company providing a first class service to the sub-contract laser cutting market.

"The company only came into existence in 2001 but it has quickly made its mark in the industry, not just in the Black Country but the wider West Midlands and around the UK.

"Advantage West Midlands has a key role to provide appropriate finance to help successful businesses realise opportunities for growth and Midtherm Laser’s commitment to its future has been supported by an SFIE grant, safeguarding existing jobs, creating new ones and boosting the regional economy."
