Newport Unveils the ProLite Xt Orion Diode Laser Solution at Photonics West 2008

ProLite Xt family high brightness diodeTucson, Arizona – January 22, 2008 – Newport Corporation’s Spectra-Physics Lasers Division today introduced the latest member of its ProLite® Xt family – the Orion™.  This state-of-the-art high brightness fiber coupled diode solution uses a powerful new “mini-bar” concept to deliver more than 20 W output from a 105 µm fiber.  The Orion diode laser’s small footprint and low thermal load help ensure maximum design flexibility for commercial laser systems in the industrial manufacturing and life and health science markets.
“Over the years, Spectra-Physics® has continued to push the envelope in single emitter technology.  The Orion series leverages a long list of innovations in materials, device design and process refinement, and, as a result, it is one of the brightest diode sources available in the industry,” said Michael Atchley, Product Marketing Manager for Newport’s Spectra-Physics Lasers Division.  “Our new Orion platform uses multiple single emitters to create a revolutionary mini-bar concept that ensures maximum reliability.  This design, combined with optimized beamshaping, provides the brightest source to date for commercial fiber lasers.”
The Orion diode laser solution features a compact and user-friendly platform that is easily integrated into a wide variety of lasers systems.  It is available at the 915, 940 and 980 nm wavelengths.
Atchley added, “We believe that the Orion laser is an attractive solution for fiber lasers for two main reasons – to increase output power or to drive down system costs by requiring fewer diodes to pump the lasers. In addition, we believe that the Orion diode laser solution will help our life and health science customers achieve the price points necessary to enable many new aesthetic applications.”
