Second Bystronic 6 kW Laser for Precision Profiles

18 months after commissioning the UK’s first 6 kW Bystronic Bystar 3015 laser cutting system, Precision Profiles Laser Division has placed an order with Bystronic UK Limited for a second similar system, only this time the machine features the 4 x 2.5 m bed size.  The order is valued at in excess of £500,000.

Precision Profiles, part of a £28M group of companies, was established in its present form in 1987 to provide a profiling, plasma, laser cutting and steel stockholding facility. This was closely followed with fasteners, tools and stainless steel stockholding divisions.  The company invested in its first Bystronic laser in 2002 and this was followed by a second machine in 2003.  Both these machines feature 3.5 kW resonators and are used to produce components in a wide range of materials for a variety of customers including those in the yellow goods, architectural and bridge building industries, to name just a few.

The company identified an opportunity to further increase the service it provides by moving into the 20 – 25 mm material thickness market resulting in the purchase of the first 6 kW system.

Chris Southworth, the company’s material manager, comments: “We have been very impressed with the quality of components produced and reliability of the Bystronic machines.  When we took the decision to invest in the 6 kW laser to enable us to handle thicker gauge materials the natural choice was Bystronic.  We visited the manufacturing unit in Switzerland where a number of samples were cut.  A specific job for the agricultural industry, which we cannot cut on our existing machines, produced such amazing results that the subsequent machining and drilling operations were eliminated.”

“That machine has provided us with the additional flexibility and speed to increase production.   We have become a market leader in the cutting of thicker materials and the machine has opened up new markets, particularly in aluminium.

”One of our earlier Bystronic systems is due to be replaced and we made the decision to again look at a 6 kW machine.  We did look at other machines available before opting for the 4025 Bystar system.  We have limited factory space and therefore a machine equipped with an automatic handling system is not a viable option. To counteract this we felt going for a larger bed size would allow us to have more 2500mm x 1250mm plates on the bed at any one time, thus reducing machining down time and making us even more efficient and productive.

“Our operators are confident in the running and programming of the Bystronic systems and are capable of running multi-machines. Production is therefore seamless from one machine to another.”
