Marking Nylon Electrical Connectors

Synrad's sealed CO2 lasers are used in a variety of industrial processes including cutting, welding, drilling, and marking.

Nylon 6,6 (also known as Polyamide) is a commonly used type of cast nylon found in a variety of automotive, industrial, and consumer products. Nylon 6,6 possesses excellent heat and chemical resistance and offers superior mechanical strength. Glass fill is frequently added to further increase part strength and durability. The connectors in this example are produced from nylon 6,6 containing a 30% glass fill.

This application involved marking injection-moulded electrical connectors with two lines of ten characters each. An FH Flyer marking head was set up with a 10-watt laser. The Flyer head was fitted with a 125 mm lens that provides a 180-micron (0.007”) focused spot with a 3 mm (0.118”) depth of field.

In WinMark Pro, a text object was created existing of 20 characters (ten characters per line) using WinMark’s “European” stroke font. A text Height of 2.03 mm (0.08”) was set and added 1.0 mm (0.039”) of Extra Character Spacing. A Power was set, duty cycle percentage, equivalent to 10 watts and a mark Velocity of 203 millimetres per second (8 inches/second).

Using these settings for the glass-filled nylon connectors, engraved marks were created with good contrast in a cycle time of 0.44 seconds per part.
