Past AILU President Malcolm Gower has been appointed Visiting Professor of Laser Micro and Nanofabrication at Imperial College, London in the Optical & Semiconductor Devices Group, www3.imperial.ac.uk/opticalandsemidev, in the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

The appointment will strengthen and widen the group’s research activities in the areas of laser micro and nanomachining, MEMS and optoelectronics. Following a research career in the USA at NASA-Ames Research Center and the University of California, Berkeley and in the UK at Oxford University and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Malcolm co-founded Exitech in 1984. After the sale of the company to Oerlikon in 2006, he founded Nanophoton Technologies a consulting company specializing in the application of photonics to nanotechnology.

His current activities for AILU include sitting on the general committee, the steering committee responsible for AILU’s activities within the Photonics Knowledge Transfer Network and chairing the newly-formed Micro/Nano Special Interest Group.
