Adding Value

Be Modern Limited has recently announced investment plans worth in excess of £400,000 to diversify its offering of fireplace products at its manufacturing site on Shaftesbury Avenue, Jarrow. Pivotal to this investment is the ordering of a Bystronic Byspeed 3015 laser cutting centre equipped with 4.4 kW resonator.

Be Modern Limited is one of the UK’s largest fireplace manufacturers and distributors. The increasing trend in recent years to import cheaper products from the low cost economies in the Far East has made it increasingly challenging for UK manufactured product to remain competitive. The company believes the investment in the company’s first laser cutting system will enable it to add value to its products and differentiate them from the cheaper imported products by adding enhanced detail and decorative effects to their products.

John Harris, Be Modern’s financial director comments: “As more and more imports come into the country we as a company had to find a way to compete with these lower cost products financially whilst at the same time keeping our ranges attractive to our customers. We believe the only way forward is to further improve what we manufacture by adding value to it and not by reducing the quality.

“We initially looked at the equipment our competitors were using felt the best way for us to stay ahead was to invest in the latest, most up-do-date technology. We looked at both traditional press and punching machines aswell as laser machines before deciding to go with laser machine.”
“We believed we would achieve a better finish with a laser cutting system and we would have zero tooling costs. Our production team are very much aware of the reputation and quality of the Bystronic range of laser cutting systems and because of this we had no hesitation in placing the order with Bystronic.”
