NKT Photonics to deliver thousands of Koheras low-noise lasers for large-scale secure data network project

The Ava Group’s technology division, Future Fibre Technologies (FFT), and their in-country manufacturing partner, SFO Technologies, have selected NKT Photonics as their laser partner for a large-scale secure data network project in India. In the project, NKT Photonics will deliver low-noise Koheras fiber lasers to power the FFT-designed fiber-optic intrusion detection and location system.

The initial network deployment is projected to need in excess of 2,000 Koheras lasers over the next 9-12 months. Additional lasers will be delivered during the seven-year spares and maintenance period following the initial three-year warranty period.

The lasers are the key component in the Distributed Acoustical Sensing (DAS) system that monitors the several thousand km long network. DAS systems of this scale put very high demands on the lasers. They must have very low intensity- and phase noise to enable maximum distance between system points and ensure incident detection with a minimum of false alarms. Meanwhile, the lasers must be extremely reliable while operating in a harsh and often unpredictable environment.
