Moving into laser cutting

Established in 1989 P P Plasma has gained a reputation for providing customers with a professionally timed and reliable laser, plasma and waterjet sub-contract facility. However a decline in demand for plasma cut profiles and an increase in demand for laser cut profiles encouraged P P Plasma to invest in it first high specification Bystronic laser cutting laser, a Bystar L 4020.

In addition, P P Plasma is developing an aerospace division of the business and the Bystronic Bystar laser cutting system has enabled the company to test cutting laser profiles with argon as opposed to using liquid nitrogen. When cut with argon (rather than liquid nitrogen), certain types of titanium (namely grade 5 and grade 7) require less machining and this is of particular importance to the aerospace industry who demand such exacting standards of quality from their suppliers.

Richard Mazurkiewicz, P P Plasma’s marketing undergraduate comments: “As our company name suggests we began as a plasma cutting sub-contractor. However as advances have been made in laser cutting over the years we have moved with the times to ensure we can offer our customers the very best products and services.

“When we had established our requirements for a laser cutting system we actually only looked at two suppliers. We opted for the Bystronic Bystar L laser because of its bedsize and power. Since its installation we are cutting up to 25 mm stainless steel (304L, 316L, 321, 3cr 12, UNS3180803, Duplex and Super Duplex) and 15 mm aluminium in sheet sizes up to 2500 mm wide.”

Mazurkiewicz continues: “The greatest advantage has been the results achieved when cutting with argon. This achievement will enable us to become a major supplier to the aerospace industry.”

Due to the success of the first laser P P Plasma decided to invest in a second Bystar laser cutting system a mere nine months after installation of their first ever laser machine - this time a 4 metre Bystar again with a 6kW laser.

Mr Peter McCabe, managing director of P P Plasma concludes: “The success of the first Bystar encouraged to invest in a second system. The service accorded by Bystronic is superb, we have never received service like it from a supplier and in fact it has redefined what P P Plasma expects from its suppliers.”
