Newport Announces the New, Single-Channel Benchtop Optical Meter

Newport Corporation, a worldwide leader in lasers and photonics solutions, announces the latest addition to the optical power meter and detector family, the 1928-C Single-Channel Benchtop Optical Meter. Compact and versatile, the new power meter is an affordable alternative for the customers who need a single channel, benchtop energy/power measurement tool. The new model interfaces with all of Newport's photodiode detectors, thermopiles, and pyroelectric detectors. It has the capability of measuring from 11 pW up to 20 kW of optical power and from 7 uJ to 20 kJ of pulse energy. The fast 100 kHz sampling rate ensures that the pulse measurements are accurate and any real fluctuations in the CW power are not ignored.

Newport's new meter incorporates various filtering to make the reading more stable. Advanced features include highly visible color display, graphing, strip chart display, statistics, data storage via internal memory or USB flash drive, and an analog output interface. Notably, this meter does not have an internal fan to cool the instrument, a distinct advantage in applications where the vibration of a fan motor could interfere with stability in an experimental setup.

The 1928-C Optical Meter is also equipped with several environment-friendly features: the meticulously-designed circuitry allows much lower energy consumption compared to the 1936-C model. It also features a stand-by mode for further energy savings when the meter is not actively used. The optical meter can be easily reactivated with the press of any button on the front panel. Finally, the meter can display irradiance in "sun" units, enabling photovoltaic researchers to use the power meter as a complementary tool to a reference solar cell.

Developed specifically for users who do not need to measure extremely low light levels, the1928-C is a new, cost-effective solution, priced at only $2,495. Optionally, Newport's 1936-C/2936-C Series offers higher performance for demanding or extreme-low-light tasks, and starts at $3,295 US list price. "We've designed this new product to answer the needs of many budget-strained customers who require a sophisticated and feature-rich power/energy meter at an affordable price," notes Jay Jeong, Newport's Product Marketing Manager for Photonics Products. He adds, "Newport is very pleased to offer this extremely successful optical power meter, along with the recently introduced 818-xx/DB and 818-xx-L/DB series photodiode detectors - all providing the most advanced measurement solutions at cost-effective prices.
