Maurice Gates - a founder member of AILU

We were saddened to hear of the death of one of AILU's founder members, Maurice Gates, who died on Easter Monday, 28 March 2016. Maurice, whose AILU membership number was 001, was always a great supporter of the Association.

Former AILU President, Neil Main (MD at Micrometric) recalled "Maurice started Micrometric in 1982 when there were very few laser job shops about. He had previously been at English Electric Valve (EEV now E2V). He got involved with AILU very soon after it started and was on the committee for many years. He was also a recipient of the AILU Award in 1999."

AILU member Clive Grafton-Reed (Rolls Royce) said "I had the good fortune to meet Maurice many times over the years, as a customer of ours, as a leader in the UK industry and someone who willingly offered advice to new comers to our industry. He was always a gentlemen, elegantly combining a successful business with technical knowledge which is an example to us all."

Maurice had been suffering from Alzheimers for some time. He leaves his wife Jaquie and daughter Hilary. His funeral is at Lincoln Crematorium at 13:50 on 19th April and there will be a gathering after at Washingborough Hall.
